BLUF: The U.S. bombing of Iran's nuclear sites on June 21, 2025, marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, with the United States now directly involved. This move by President Donald Trump has sent shockwaves through the international community, raising concerns about potential retaliatory attacks on American soil and the broader implications for global security. The strikes targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, using advanced weaponry such as the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a powerful bunker-buster bomb capable of penetrating deeply buried targets ^1,2,3^

The immediate aftermath of the strikes has been marked by heightened tensions and a flurry of diplomatic activity. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of "everlasting consequences" and vowed that Iran would consider all possible responses ^4^ The Iranian military has already launched missiles in retaliation, targeting Israeli cities and causing significant damage and casualties ^2,4^ The Israeli military has ordered schools and most workplaces to remain closed as the country braces for further Iranian retaliation ^5,6^

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued an advisory warning of a heightened threat environment in the United States, citing the potential for terrorist attacks and cyberattacks by Iranian state actors or affiliated groups ^7,8^ The advisory notes that recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing conflict could contribute to additional attacks ^7,8^ The Department of Homeland Security has also warned of the possibility of low-level cyberattacks by "hacktivists" and larger attacks if Iranian leaders issue a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland ^8^

Iran has a history of using asymmetric tactics against stronger foes, including terrorist attacks. In 1983, the U.S. accused Iran of orchestrating the bombings of a Marine barracks and embassy in Beirut through its Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah, killing hundreds ^9^ Today, Iran could potentially launch terrorist attacks using Hezbollah fighters or other proxy groups, targeting U.S. military and civilian assets in the region and possibly on American soil ^10^

The U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities may not have delivered a death blow to a program that is deeply embedded in Iran’s history, culture, sense of security, and national identity ^11,6^ Iran's Nuclear Dreams: Strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities may not have delivered a death blow to a program that is deeply embedded in Iran’s history, culture, sense of security, and national identity. One way that Iran could potentially retaliate for the American strikes, analysts say, would be to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for oil and gas ^11^ This move could have significant economic implications, as the Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies ^11^

The U.S. has sent additional refueling aircraft to Europe that could be used to assist fighter jets protecting American bases or extending the range of bombers involved in any possible strike on Iranian nuclear facilities ^11^ The U.S. military has also deployed additional forces to protect potential targets from retaliatory attacks ^8^ These measures underscore the seriousness with which the U.S. is taking the threat of Iranian retaliation.

The international community has reacted with a mix of concern and condemnation. World leaders have called for dialogue and de-escalation, while some have expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself against Iranian aggression ^12^ The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation, with members urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation ^12^

In the wake of the U.S. strikes, there have been protests and anti-war rallies in various cities around the world, including in the United States ^7,13^ These protests reflect the deep divisions within American society over the country's involvement in the Middle East and the potential consequences of military action against Iran.

The U.S. bombing of Iran's nuclear sites has raised serious questions about the future of the conflict and the potential for further escalation. Iran faces hard choices in how to respond, with options ranging from limited missile strikes to more significant retaliatory actions, including terrorist attacks and cyberattacks ^14,15,16^ The U.S. must be prepared for a range of possible responses and take steps to protect American interests and citizens both at home and abroad.

The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this conflict and its impact on global security. The U.S. must work with its allies to contain the situation and prevent further escalation, while also being prepared to respond to any Iranian retaliation. The international community must also play a role in encouraging diplomacy and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The stakes are high, and the consequences of further escalation could be catastrophic.
